Itinerary:

Join me for a Sunday Hike to Brasstown Bald. We will take the less frequently used Wagon Train Trail and hike our way about 7 miles to the top of Brasstown Bald. The Wagon Train Trail (WTT) is one of the "Big 3" that go up Brasstown Bald.... the other two being the Arkaquah and Jacks Knob trails.  WTT is the longest of the three and offers a couple of good overlooks in the summer.

Once we get to the northern end of the WTT, we will walk the paved trail to the Brasstown Bald summit and take a long lunch break.  There is also a gift shop with snacks at the parking lot. After lunch we will travel back 7 miles to our cars.

The carpool location is at the Busbee Park & Ride off Chastain Road. Let's meet just before 8am. After introductions and direction handouts we will be on the road by 8am.

Standing 4784' above sea level with 2107' of clean prominence, Brasstown Bald is the tallest mtn in GA. The view from the observation platform is definitely one of the finest in the state...you can see most all of the other highest peaks in GA as well as into NC, TN, and SC.

The WTT was actually built by convict labor many years ago.  This old roadbed was the original path that Georgia highway 66 was to follow, but then the project was abandoned and it was never paved.  So it is a fairly wide path but also not used that often so there will most likely be some high grass, etc that we hike through.

Summary:

WTT up - 6.6 miles 2250' ascent, 150' descent BB trail out and back - .8 mi, 400' ascent/descent WTT down - 6.6 mi 150' ascent, 2250' descent

Elevation gain:  3050 vertical feet

Distance:  14.8 miles

Given the length of the trail and the amount of elevation gain, this hike is considered strenuous.  All participants should be in excellent physical condition.

NOTE:  This is not a good hike to attend if you have some kind of pressing deadline requiring you to return to Atlanta by a specific time.
