EVENT ADDENDUM, SUN. JULY 24th:  We can still accept up to about 5 more AOC member attendees at this event even though REI's formal reserved spots are now "officially" all filled.  If you'd like to participate, simply register below to attend with the AOC.  The REI Staff Member, Brian Matthews who taught the "Lightweight Backpacking" class 2 weeks ago, assured us that they will not turn away attendees who "walk in" without having succeeded in making a formal reservation.  - Charlie, AOC Volunteer Training Coordinator

ORIGINAL NOTES about HOW to FORMALLY SIGN UP through REI:

1. PLEASE go ASAP to REI.com to FORMALLY RESERVE YOUR OWN FREE SPOT in this class.  Here's the convenient ink to the registration webpage:   https://www.rei.com/events/camping-basics/atlanta/150667   It takes just a couple of minutes to fill in and submit the brief online registration form. No problem if you're not an REI "member" or don't remember your member number - if so just skip clicking that box on the form. When I registered for myself on July 13th  there were 13 spaces remaining.

2. PLEASE ALSO ADD YOURSELF to our INFORMAL AOC "SUBGROUP ROSTER" for this event by clicking, etc. at the base of this article.  (See "Why an AOC Subgroup?" below.)

IN A NUTSHELL:  Our fine Club offers dozens of exciting outdoor camping and backpacking experiences each year.  I'm posting this event in the interest of members who would like to learn more about how to enjoy spending nights in the beautiful outdoors, regardless of the camping style you choose.
Here's REI's online ad for the free 90-minute indoor class:
CAMPING BASICS:  Have you wanted to try camping but don't know how to get started?  We will cover the basics: how to be comfortable while camping, how to select appropriate gear and equipment, fun activities, and great local areas where you can give it a try.

As I've explained above feel free to click on the linked REI webpage and register yourself for this indoor REI class on Thursday evening, July 28th at the REI "Atlanta Store" in NE Atlanta—see easy Directions to the store below.  If their formally reservable spots are are all "filled" consider showing up anyway, since they rarely if ever turn away friendly "walk-ins."

Metro Atlanta's REI ("Recreation Equipment Inc.") stores offer a variety of FREE classes, seminars and talks on topics ranging from hiking, backpacking, camping, bicycling & paddling to skiing, rock climbing & mountaineering—also first-hand accounts of exotic adventures and favorite wilderness destinations.  Each session is presented by an invited guest speaker who is an expert in their field or by an REI employee who specializes in the featured topic.  The presenter may discuss among other things the latest REI merchandise that relates to the topic, but be assured that there's no need to buy anything unless you so choose.

MEETING & SEATING:  Our AOC subgroup will first gather at 6:40 PM just inside the store entrance where we'll introduce one another and "take roll."  Then a few minutes before 7:00 PM we'll find seating together in the designated area where we'll meet the featured speaker(s) and other clinic attendees.  If you have to arrive late, you can likely still be seated - just ask an REI employee to direct you to the seating area.

WHY an AOC "SUBGROUP" for this FREE REI CLASS?  Several good reasons:
- AOC members can conveniently register to attend by going to the linked REI webpage for the class, and may not be aware that the class is available without seeing this AtlantaOutdoorClub.com announcement.
- By attending the class together as a "subgroup" we can meet other AOC members who share our interest in the class topic and can discuss related AOC-sponsored events.
- We can do "AOC Outreach" by letting non-member class attendees and REI staffers know how easy it is to become active in our fine Club.
- After the class our AOC subgroup can browse the store together to compare and discuss various examples of the relevant gear, clothing, guidebooks, maps, etc.
- A record of each AOC member's attendance and a link to the class details is automatically archived in the member's "My Past Events" on the Club website.

P.S.  OTHER REI CLASSES - HOW to make RESERVATIONS ON YOUR OWN:  You can check the various REI stores' class offerings and space availability as follows, and reserve spot(s) for yourself and friends for any class that interests you:
1. Go to http://www.rei.com/
2. Click on "Stores" at the top of the home page to locate one or more locations that are convenient to you, and click, etc. to select a particular one.

3. Scroll down the list of scheduled events that appear on the store's webpage and click on any of the Classes or Seminars that interest you. (Note that many are FREE and also that numerous fee-based classes are available.)
4. Fill in the online Reservation form and click "Submit."  For most REI classes it's unnecessary to be an REI member, but a lifetime REI membership costs only about $20. (A major benefit of membership is your annual "dividend" - a refund based on your REI purchases in the previous year.)

5. If you fail to succeed in making a formal reservation, keep in mind that WALK-INS at REI's free in-store events are usually acceptable and rarely if ever are turned away.
