AOC members who have an interest in protecting our local old-growth forests are encouraged to attend this inspiring Thu evening presentation. It will be hosted by Trees Atlanta at their "Treehouse" beside the East Side Beltline, about 1 mile east of downtown Atlanta - see Directions and GPS destination address below. Just two years ago the lovely 21-acre DeKalb County greenspace that now is known as Briarlake Community Forest was destined to be cut down. Like so many urban forests it was "on the chopping block" to be transformed into acres of asphalt and hundreds of condo units. The forest and its numerous old-growth trees are still standing and thriving today thanks to the bold efforts of a group of like-minded citizens who until recently had been strangers to one another. By the way, we AOCers have already enjoyed two nice Club-sponsored hikes at Briarlake Forest and several of our members have also pitched in with the park's regularly scheduled "workdays." Hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life have contributed by helping to remove invasive plants and making the natural area more accessible to the public - a place where nature lovers of all ages can appreciate shady trails, birds, wildflowers and native flora & fauna. | |||||
