Many us will be out late the night before celebrating the new year, so this hike doesn't start until the early afternoon. It should be a great way to start '09 if one of your resolutions is to be more active and get on the trail a bit more.

While this event is open to all, it is also to encourage new members (those who have yet to do an outdoors event with the AOC) to come out and join us. The actual number of spots available for this hike is 16 but the there are 8 spots reserved for new members.

How this works is that the actual maximum group size for this hike is 16. Until 8 new members are signed up, they will be given priority on the waitlist and moved over to the event. Once there are 8 signed up, then registration will proceed as usual. But anyone can sign up from the start and we'll just reserve the extra spots for the new members.

This is a good hike to get started with as well. It is at the Jones Bridge unit of the Chattahoochee NRA..certainly some of the finest parks in the Atlanta Metro area. Much of our walk will provide some scenic views of the Chattahoochee...and a good bit of it will be in the nearby woods.

There is very little elevation change along the trail...only about 500 feet of total ascent for the entire hike. We will stop for a long lunch break near the halfway point. Because it is a new member hike, we will be moving a very comfortable pace. Total distance should end up being about 6 miles. So even though it is a D2 (easy) hike, it will be long enough to provide a moderate workout.

From GA 400, take exit 7a, and head East 4.1 miles through the intersection of Holcomb Bridge and Nesbitt Ferry Road to the junction of Barnwell Road. Turn left on Barnwell Rd, and travel approx 2 miles to Jones Bridge Branch which will be on the right. Turn in and go a little over 1/2 mile to large parking lot at end of road.
