In the Roswell Area, we should get about 97% of the total eclipse!. If you'd like to try to see it (weather cooperating), join me for this eclipse hike at Leita Thompson. Here's the plan: We'll do a very moderate hike from 12:30 pm to about 1:30 pm. (The full eclipse will take place around 2:30 pm, though darkening of the skies will start an hour before.) Then, we'll gather in the open meadow where - - if the sky is clear - - we'll have a good view of the sun. Pack a lunch (you can leave it in a cooler in your car), bring a lawn chair, wear sunscreen, and let's have a picnic! I have eclipse glasses for 12 people, so I'm limiting the hike to that number. If you have eclipse glasses of your own, please let me know. I can include more than twelve people if some folks have their own glasses. The trail around Leita Thompson "undulates," but there is nothing steep. The trail is wide and even, so it's a really great place for a safe hike. We can stop periodically if needed, though our pace will not be challenging. If you've never hiked with the AOC because of the fear of holding people back, this is a great hike to join. This park is a big surprise to folks who see it for the first time. Many people drive past it every day, never realizing what a charming area it is for hiking. This is a dog-friendly park, with many dogs on the trail. You are welcome to bring your dog as long as you keep it on leash and clean up any messes that it makes. There is a fenced in "off leash" area if you'd like for your dog to be able to run free and play with other dogs. A little more information on the park: http://thefarm.typepad.com/ngmo/2009/06/leita-thompson-memorial-park.html There are no bathrooms, but there are three sets of porta potties throughout the park. . | |||||||

Event Directions: | N 34.06315, W -84.40678 1355 Woodstock Rd Roswell, GA 30075 It's best to use maps.google.com and map directions from your destination. You can go to maps.google.com and enter the bold text below in to the search bar. If you chose Satelite View, you can see a birdseye view of the parking lot. 34.06315, -84.40678 There are three entrances to the area: one for the dog park, the second for the arts center building , and the third for the walking trails. We will park at the lot closest to the dog park. If that lot is full, park in the second lot, the larger overflow lot. DO NOT PARK AT THE PAVILION LOT! It's the smallest, and it's the farthest from where we will be watching the eclipse.
