Itinerary: | |||||||
Let’s hike Vineyard Mountain. Located near Red Top Mountain State Park and Cartersville, this hike is an excellent workout. Along the way we will explore areas which were previously mined for iron ore back in the heyday for the nearby iron furnaces. We will be starting at the Vineyard Mountain trailhead off Red Top Mountain Road. The trailhead is located on the left side of the road immediately before crossing the Bethany Bridge which marks the entrance to Red Top Mountain State Park. As this trailhead is located outside of the park, parking is free. We will hike out the yellow trail which weaves through some beautiful forests and past numerous coves surrounding Lake Allatoona. Along the way we will reach an overlook of the Allatoona Dam. We will start returning on the yellow trail but take a few short off trail detours along the way to view some areas where ore mining occurred back in the 1800’s. The difficulty of this hike is deceiving. There are no long climbs but instead there are numerous up and downs, some of them fairly steep. In total, we will do about 1000 feet of elevation gain. We will also be doing some brief off trail sections which adds a degree of difficulty. I would NOT recommend this hike for beginner hikers.
