Itinerary:

OVERVIEW:  A well-kept secret among hikers, joggers and dog walkers, Lullwater Park is a "crown jewel" of the Emory University campus in NE Atlanta.  The 185-acre forested nature preserve boasts an extensive trail system that takes visitors around beautiful Candler Lake, past the Emory president's "Lullwater Estate" mansion, along the banks of South Fork Peachtree Creek with its old mill ruins & waterfalls, and over the creek via a new $177,000 210-foot-long suspension footbridge.  The scenic creekside trails connect conveniently to the more recently developed "Hahn Woods" park at the western end of Emory's forest.

WHEN & WHERE?
We’ll gather at 6:00 PM in the parking lot of the Clifton School, 1900 Starvine Way, Atlanta, GA 30322—see detailed Directions below, and keep in mind that 5:00 to 6:00 PM is the heart of rush hour so allow plenty of drive time!  After 6:00 PM on weekdays (and all day on Sat & Sun) this day-care facility for children of Emory personnel kindly offers free parking for Lullwater Park visitors.

HIKE & PICNIC PLAN:  After introducing one another and taking care of signing our AOC waiver forms, we’ll begin the hike at about 6:15 PM and take a moderate pace, with occasional stops and photo-ops at scenic spots along the way—about 4 miles total.  Well-behaved dogs are welcome provided they're leashed and under their owners' control.  At about 7:00 PM we'll choose an appropriate spot to relax and enjoy our picnic dinners & drinks from our packs.  We expect to be back at our vehicles by dusk—about 8:45 PM.

OPTIONAL POST-HIKE "STARGAZE" at nearby FERNBANK OBSERVATORY, 9-10 PM:   If there’s enough interest and if skies are mostly clear Charlie will lead a caravan of vehicles to the nearby Fernbank Science Center Observatory—just 2 miles south of Emory at 156 Heaton Park Drive, Atlanta, GA 30307.  On Thursday evenings Fernbank's expert astronomy staff offers FREE viewing sessions through the largest telescope in the Southeast that is dedicated primarily to public observing (weather permitting).  On August 6th our viewing subjects may include the craters of the full moon, the ringed planet Saturn, and the 2-million-light-years-distant Andromeda Galaxy—a nearby "twin" of our own Milky Way.  For more on Fernbank's public astronomy programs go to
FSC.Fernbank.edu.

“RAIN OR SHINE EVENT”:  We’ll plan to go ahead with the event unless the forecast (as of about 9:00 AM on the day of the hike) calls for a high likelihood of strong thunderstorms during our 6-9 PM hike time that evening—in which case I’ll email everyone by about 10:00 AM and post “cancelled” for the event on the AOC website.  If only isolated or light storms are expected, please be prepared by bringing appropriate rain gear.

Required Items to Bring:

• Wear comfortable well-broken-in Athletic Shoes or Hiking Boots with a coarse tread and Lightweight Clothing appropriate for the weather, including Rain Gear if showers are forecast.
SUGGESTION:  Change into your hiking clothing at work and drive to the event straight from work.

• Bring a Picnic Dinner (e.g., sandwich, fresh fruit, salad, etc.) packed in a lightweight DayPack or Fanny Pack.  The trip leader will bring some fresh-picked organic Figs and Cherry Tomatoes to share, and encourages others to share your favorite goodies with the group.
SUGGESTION:  If you plan to drive straight from work, pack your picnic lunch and beverages in a small iced-down Cooler to leave in your car while you're at work.

Hydrate in advance and carry in your pack a filled Water Bottle or two (or other favorite soft beverages)—or if you have one, your filled "Camelbak" hydration system.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

• Consider bringing a pair of Trekking Poles if you have a pair and like to use them.  A simple Hiking Stick is an excellent alternative.

• Consider bringing your Camera—also perhaps lightweight Binoculars if you have a pair, for birding, etc.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

From the "SPAGHETTI JUNCTION" I-85 / I-285 INTERCHANGE in NE Metro Atlanta:

1) Take I-85 South toward Atlanta about 4 miles and exit at Exit #91 "Clairmont Road."

2) Turn Left onto Clairmont Road (US-23 southeastward toward Decatur) and go about 3.2 miles to the traffic light at Starvine Way (less than a quarter mile past the two traffic lights in front of the huge VA Hospital.)

3) Turn Right onto Starvine Way and go 0.4 mile (through Emory's "Clairmont Campus" and a couple of stop signs) to the "Clifton School" on your Right.  We'll meet in the farthest end of the school's front parking lot beside the steel & stone gate that blocks further passage along Starvine Way—its signs say "Authorized Entry Only."
