Itinerary: | |||||||
The Gahuti Trail, Cherokee for "mother mountain", travels around the edge of Fort Mountain State Park, passing just below the summits of Cohutta and Fort mountains. Ever changing, the trail is both beautiful and challenging in all seasons, especially in the Fall. This is a very scenic trail that features great views, rocky outcroppings, and a couple of waterfalls. There are a few long, steep ascents and a few short, sharp climbs but this is considered a D4 mainly for the length. Our hike starts at the Cool Springs overlook for an 8.2 mile loop. We will have lunch about half way around the loop at the Goldmine Creek waterfall. The final section of the hike is on the Stone Wall Trail which connects with the Gahuti Backcountry Trail. This will lead us to the prehistoric stone wall and the outstanding view at the West Overlook. Fort Mountain is named for a mysterious 855 foot long wall constructed along the western slope of the highest point of the mountain. The structure has been attributed to various historical figures, but today most authorities believe the wall was constructed by Woodlands-era Indians between 500 BC and 500 AD as fortification against other more hostile Indians or ancient ceremonies. | |||||||
