Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
Come Join Bunne and Allen for their Wedding Anniversary Outing at FD Roosevelt State Park. For this event, we will explore the Wolfden loop, which is new to me. If the energy of the group is strong after we get to the parking lot, we will go out and back to Dowdell Knob. The initial loop will be about 6.5 miles over about 3 hours, and the out-and-back could add another 6 hilly miles if people wish, for a total of 5.5 hours. This is a great place to get in a long and scenic hike as the leaves are down and we will go at a moderate pace. Expect an average moving speed of about 2.5 mph – not including breaks. We will stick together as a group -- staying within visual and/or audible range throughout the hike. We will start at the middle of this double loop trail so people have the option to do about 6.5 miles with us as we celebrate over 30 years of,... well, ups and downs, and many wonderful times in Nature,. The first loop will be on the Wolfden trail with about 5 waterfalls, and we will likely break for lunch before getting back to the parking lot. For the stout hearted, we will breeze on past the parking lot and keep hiking out, and up, to the great viewpoint at Dowdell Knob. This will be another 6 miles total, with fantastic views along the ridge through the open forest. (If you want to take the easy way, you can just drive from our parking spot to the knob.) This could be a long day, but we will keep the pace moderate for anyone wanting to have a long day, at a solid D4 effort. We hope you can join us! If you have not completed a strenuous D3 recently, please email hiking information (distance, elevation, time) to the trip leaders; otherwise we will put you on the waitlist.
