Itinerary:

Ok we did this hike last year and had a good turnout, so we are going to try it again and start a little tradition, perhaps.

We'll begin by hiking up the main trail...as we near the top, we will veer off onto some side trails and along the side of the exposed rock face. If the rock is too wet, (which is likely), there is a regular dirt trail that runs parallel to the edge. That option is there for anyone who is afraid of heights as well. There are numerous overlooks off this trail so we can still enjoy the views.

You can see Blood, Cowrock and Tray mtns as well as Brasstown Bald from near the top .   On a clear day to the south, you can see Stone Mtn and just make out the Atl skyline.  We'll also make a short side trip to the "eastern overlook" where you can see Rabun Bald in the distance.

We will also check out "the Boulder" and watch the sunset if the weather cooperates,  This is one of the best sunset spots in GA.   After we enjoy the fading light fora while (depends on how cold it is), we will head back down, partly in the dark (so bring a headlamp or flashlight).

This event would ordinarily be rated as a D4, but we are making it a D3 due to the pace, which will be very moderate.   It will be more of a social hike than a workout hike and we'll keep the group together for the most part...still with 1500+ feet of elevation gain you can't help but get your heart rate up a bit, despite the more relaxed pace.

Total distance should be about 5 miles. Total ascent will be around 1500-1800 feet.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • We would feel like scrooges, but if rain is forecast, we will sadly have to cancel a very yonah christmas.
  • The last half mile of our drive to the trailhead is on a gravel road.
