Itinerary:

We will take the loop counterclockwise from the hiker parking lot above the falls next to the restroom building.

We will have a late lunch at about 1pm from the chairs at the overlook on the back of the Hike Inn property. We might even see the recently sighted bears and turkey along the way during the morning hike.

After lunch we will continue north and west on the Hike Inn trail to join with the AT Approach trail and follow it southbound to our parking.

This loop is in the high end of the range for a D4 with 2200 feet of climbing. The terrain is moderate in comparison with other hikes associated with the AT.

There is a $5 Georgia State Parks parking fee per vehicle at Amicalola Falls State Park unless you display an annual pass.

Recent D3/D4 experience is required for this hike. Otherwise, please send an email to the trip leader explaining your qualifications.

How to Get There:

DIRECTIONS from GA-400/ I-285 INTERCHANGE in N ATLANTA (Sandy Springs) to AMICALOLA FALLS STATE PARK (about 60 miles or 90 minutes):

1. From the GA-400/ I-285 interchange go North on GA-400/US-19 N about 42 miles to the traffic light at GA-136 (a.k.a. Harmony Church Rd).
2. Turn Left off GA-400 onto GA-136 and follow it westward about 17.3 miles.
3. Bear Right onto GA- 183 (a.k.a. Elliott Pkwy) and go about 1.1 miles.
4. Bear Right onto GA-52 East and go 1.6 miles.
5. Turn Left onto Amicalola Falls State Park Rd, at the park entrance.
6. Continue northward and take the first left. The road will climb steeply to the top of the falls, where you will take a right and continue to either parking lot. The trailhead is located next to the upper parking lot, but it is often full, so you may have to use the lower lot which is immediately above the falls.

Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $41.60 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
