Itinerary:

Welcome Spring by joining me for a hike on the Tennessee Rock and James Edmond Trails at Black Rock Mountain State Park. Five mountains combine to make this the highest state park in Georgia with Black Rock Mountain the highest of the group at 3,640 feet.

The Tennessee Rock trail will be our warm up for the much longer, harder James Edmond trail. It is a 2.2 mile trail with modest elevation. The trail leads to the highest elevation point at 3,640 feet. We'll walk along the Eastern Continental Divide to Tennessee Rock with views to north and west. Another lookout has a view to the east, where Brasstown Bald and Clingmans Dome can be seen on a clear day.

After completing the Tenn Rock loop, we'll join the 7.2 mile James Edmond loop trail. This is where we'll see most of the elevation gain - with most of that at the end of the hike. Since we end the hike climbing, that means we begin this trail descending. We pass through a thick forest along a stream and pass a small but charming waterfall. We make our way to the spectacular view off Lookout Mountain of Wolffork Valley. We'll stop here to enjoy the view and have our lunch.

We'll finish the loop ending with almost 1000 feet elevation gain in the last two miles; approximately 2500 gain for the hike. For this reason, this is NOT a starter D4. Some trip leaders have rated this hike at D5 but I will be maintaining a moderate pace of 2.5-2.7. I want to see D4 experience in your hike history; otherwise, I'll be contacting you.

Dress in layers; this is the highest park in Georgia so it will be chillier at the peaks.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. There is not a restroom at the trailhead. You can stop in Clayton or drive past the trailhead to the Visitor Center (where there is also a wonderful view).
