However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. Itinerary: | |||||||
*Must have recent solid D4 experience. This is a paid event. The leaders will collect the payment directly. Montenegro and Albania lie just below Croatia. They are rich in history, culture and are mountainous. We have partnered with "Wild Montenegro" to explore the region. This is a GUIDED hike. Breakfast and lunch will be included. Lodging and transportation are provided. Youtube Durmitor National Park and Prokletije National Park in Montenegro as well as Theth in Albania. We think you will be amazed at the scenery. All participants will be placed on a wait list initially. Cost of the trip includes 7 nights lodging. The below detailed description is from our outfitter. We apologize for the formatting issues. Durmitor National Park is the largest National Park in Montenegro and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site . The Park is characterized by diversified ecosystems and numerous endemic species, as well as the some of the highest peaks of the Dinaric mountains, Tara River Canyon , which was proclaimed a world ecological reserve, 18 glacial lakes known as “the mountain eyes” of which the Black Lake is the most famous one and represents a sort of the symbol of the Park and its beauty. Here, the water and ice have eroded the limestone typical of the place and thus creating a rare- beauty landscape – a reason enough why you shouldn’t miss experiencing it. The Park territory covers the Durmitor massif and the narrow Tara Canyon which is 1.300 meters deep – second after the Grand Canyon Colorado. Tara River, also known as the “Teardrop of Europe”, is considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers on the entire continent. The diverse flora and fauna of Biogradska Gora National park is another amazing treasure of nature . Biogradska Gora is one of the oldest protected areas in the world. Only 6 years after Yellowstone was declared the first national park in America, Prince Nikola I Petrovic put Biogradska Gora under state protection in 1878. Due to its immense natural wealth and its preservation, Biogradska Gora National Park has been proclaimed a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. The most impressive part of the National Park is the primeval rainforest reserve, one of the last in Europe. It is located in the valley of Biograd and Jezerstica River, surrounding Biograd Lake where the beauty of the ancient forests reflects in their waters. Many of the trees in the forest are over half a millennium old , with some soaring to 60 m high. This is the region of magnificent beauty and graceful experience. Prokletije National Park is the most dramatic hiking destination in Montenegro. Prokletije or Accursed Mountains are the southernmost and highest part of the Dinaric Alps . Surreally scenic and remote, this magnificent area may well be one of Europe’s least explored corners. Here, vertical peaks pierce the sky. The park encompasses most of the Prokletije Mountains (also known as the Albanian Alps), which form the natural border between Montenegro and Albania. Given the remoteness of this region, you’ll see very few people hiking here . Nestled in the heart of the Albanian Alps, Theth National Park is an untouched paradise of dramatic landscapes and rich culture. Here, the majesty of the rugged peaks and the crystal-clear waters of the river create a scene of tranquil beauty. The park is a true hiker's paradise with its numerous trails snaking through the dense forests, revealing cascading waterfalls and hidden glacial lakes. History and culture are equally compelling here. The charming village of Theth, with its centuries-old stone houses and iconic lock-in tower, speaks of an intriguing past, whilst the welcoming locals provide a warm encounter with Albania's rich traditions. From the echoing silence of the mountains to the lively melodies of local folklore, Theth National Park offers a journey of discovery that speaks to the soul. Experience the breathtaking beauty and the enduring spirit of Albania in the untouched wilderness of Theth National Park. Day 1 Welcome to Montenegro! Please book a room at Hotel Podgorica or one near by. We will meet our guide and van driver in the parking lot near this hotel. Hotel Podgorica is downtown, not by the airport. Before we commence the main journey, we'll first make a visit to the Orthodox Christian Monastery Ostrog, approximately 40 kilometers from Podgorica. This monastery is a remarkable religious site, dramatically nestled in a nearly vertical mountain cliff. It's not only a sacred sanctuary, but also offers breathtaking views of the landscape. From there, a scenic drive (approximately 2.5 hours) will take you through the beautiful Montenegrin landscape to the town of Zabljak, situated within Durmitor National Park. Nestled in the heart of the Durmitor region and perched at an elevation of 1,450 meters above sea level, Zabljak is the highest town in the Balkans. Its unique location at the foot of Mt. Durmitor is complemented by 22 surrounding mountain peaks exceeding 2,200 meters, 18 magnificent mountain lakes, and the awe- inspiring Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. After you've settled into your hotel and had a moment to refresh, we'll embark on a tranquil walking tour around the illustrious Black Lake. This stunning natural gem is the largest and most well-known of Durmitor's 18 glacial lakes. We'll follow a scenic 3 miles trail around the lake, a must-do experience for any visitor. The lake's breathtaking beauty is accentuated by a dense
coniferous forest backdrop and
the Zabljak. This evening, you'll have the opportunity to taste the rich flavours of traditional Montenegrin cuisine in this quaint mountain resort town. Sample regional specialities like a typical shepherd's dinner and Vranac, a local red wine with a unique Mediterranean character. A peaceful night's rest in Zabljak rounds off the day, setting the stage for the exciting adventure that awaits. Difficulty Level: Easy
(D1) Day 2: Hiking to 'Red Rock' Peak (2175 m) Following a good night's rest and a hearty breakfast, we are set for today's exhilarating escapade. We'll start with a short, scenic drive (about 20 minutes) through lush forests to the foot of the striking 'Red Rock' massif. This table mountain is renowned not just for its natural beauty and breathtaking panoramas, but also for the multitude of picturesque lakes gracing its surroundings. Starting from the base (1750 m), our trail meanders gently upwards towards the visible crest of Red Rock, meandering through meadows, clearings, and patches of sparse pine forest. The ground beneath is like a vibrant carpet, adorned with an array of flowers and wild plants that enhance the impressive scenery. Red Rock As we approach the base
of Red Rock's ascent, our
trail This route offers remarkable vistas of the Lake Plateau, and you'll also catch sight of the distinctively shaped 'Black Lake'. As we approach the peak, Red Rock's orientation shifts towards the Durmitor massif, revealing some of the most spectacular views of Mount Bear and the Durmitor region, including the towering peak of Bobotov Kuk. Our journey continues
towards Black Lake
(1416 m)
. Difficulty Level:
Moderate to Difficult (D4)
Day 3: Hiking Tour to 'Prutas' Peak (2393 m) Get ready for a day of mountaineering that showcases the best landscapes of Durmitor National Park. Our hiking tour today takes us to 'Prutas' , a peak renowned for its unique rod-shaped rock formations that give it its name ("mountain of rods" in English). The trail to Prutas is an aesthetic treat, combining the beauty of deep green slopes and arresting views of the Skrcka lakes. On the way, we'll also be taking in sights of the "Djevojka" (2440 m), "Bezimeni Vrh" (2487 m), and "Bobotov Kuk"(2525m) peaks. As we descend the western plateau beneath the summit of Prutas, a breathtaking panorama of the Susica River gorge and Skrcka Lakes unfolds. Saddle of God Our hike commences from Sarban (Dobri Do 1,707 m), and over the course of approximately 3- 3.5 hours, we will ascend
700 m via a 4 km trail to reach

Moderate (D3) Day 4 Whitewater rafting on Tara River. Additional fee required for those that want to participate. Kickstart your day with an energizing breakfast in Zabljak before we take a short, 15-minute drive towards Devil's and Fish Lake. Along the way, we'll encounter the enchanting stone tomb monuments known as 'stećci'. Dating from the 12th to 16th centuries, these cultural landmarks hold a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 2016 for their historical importance. Our journey continues with a brief 20-minute drive towards the legendary Tara River. An essential part of any visit to Durmitor National Park is undoubtedly a rafting adventure on this river. The Tara River Canyon, peaking at a depth of 1,300 m (4,300ft), is Europe's deepest and the world's second- deepest canyon, after the Grand Canyon in the U.S. The canyon covers 80 km of the river's 158 km length and is part of the UNESCO- listed Durmitor National Park , recognized for its rich habitat and diverse species. Rafting offers an unrivaled, exhilarating way to explore the Tara Canyon. Marvel at the crystalline water, cascading waterfalls, and thrilling rapids that, while might appear daunting, are completely manageable for novices under the guidance of an experienced skipper. The rafting offered is typically a class 2+, sometimes class 3 depending on the season and rainfall. Our rafting tour starts from Splaviste, within Durmitor National Park, offering an intimate encounter with its unspoiled nature. Along the way, we pass by the Ljutica River, Europe's shortest, and under the historic Tara Bridge. Completed in 1940, this 172-meters-high bridge was Europe's largest vehicular concrete arch bridge at the time of its construction. After rafting, those with a love for adrenaline can experience Europe's longest zipline, soaring over the Tara River next to the stunning Tara Bridge. To recharge, we'll enjoy a traditional Montenegrin meal with mountain cheese, fish, and fresh salad. Following lunch, we embark on a journey towards Biogradska Gora National Park, an approximately one-hour drive away. The last part of drive through untouched rainforest itself is an adventure before reaching our destination - the mesmerizing Biogradsko Lake. Sitting at 1099 meters above sea level, within the heart of the National Park and surrounded by a lush forest, this tranquil setting
leaves a lasting impression.
After absorbing the
tranquillity of the lake, we
conclude our day's adventure by
heading to Kolasin
for our overnight stay. Day 5 Ascending to the peak of Kom Vasojevicki (2460 m) Start your day with a hearty breakfast in Kolasin before we depart for our adventure to Stavna village , nestled at an altitude of 1650 m. This humble hamlet lies in the shadow of the majestic Komovi massif, and it is here where our journey to the summit of Kom Vasojevicki begins. The Komovi Mountain, rising almost to a staggering 2500 meters, stands as a stunning giant in the southeastern part of Montenegro. Despite its relatively small footprint, its towering heights and breathtaking vistas have led many to regard Komovi as the most beautiful mountain in Montenegro. Upon arrival at Stavna's expansive plateau, the Kom Vasojevicki peak immediately captivates. This awe-inspiring peak lures us with its lofty promise of unforgettable panoramas. Our trek commences from Stavna, meandering through a mix of grassy and rocky terrains, nestled below the rocky massif on the northern side. After approximately 2.5 hours of ascent, we find ourselves at the magnificent Vera Pass (2200 m). This vantage point offers breathtaking views of the bordering Albanian mountains, most notably the Prokletije mountain range (also known as the Accursed Mountains). The highest peak, Maja Jezerce (2694 m), stands as a regal sentinel over the wider area. From Vera Pass, we press on towards the summit. It won't be long before you're relishing in the Kom Vasojevicki privilege of the
unrivaled view from the
peak of Kom
Vasojevicki (2460 m)
. The journey back to
Stavna village will
retrace our initial trail, each
step brimming with the
satisfaction of our ascent.

Moderate to Difficult (D4) Day 6 Grebaja Valley - wedged between the towers of Karanfili Peaks After a breakfast, we begin our day with a brief 15-20 minute transfer to the remarkable Grebaja Valley. Framed by the towering karst spires of the Karanfili (2,461 m) , the Grebaja Valley presents an imposing spectacle that many regard as one of the most striking in the Balkans. Its U- shaped form, ensconced by sharp, towering peaks, gives the impression of a titanic wolf's jaw forged by the Balkan landscapes. For those with a deep affinity for outdoor pursuits, Grebaja Valley is a veritable paradise and a must- visit spot when hiking in Montenegro. We initiate our trek with a steady ascent through a shaded beech forest, culminating in a challenging climb to the twinsummits of Popadija and Talijanka (2,056m) . The summit's vista is genuinely breathtaking, beginning with the proximal Karanfili peaks and extending to the expansive Prokletije massif (or the Albanian Alps). The panorama encompasses the highest peaks and sweeps down to the magnificent Grebaja Valley. At this vantage point, the rugged peaks across the valley appear almost within arm's reach, and the eye wanders

between Montenegro and Albania,
penetrating the
heart of Albania's Kelmend
region. After a day filled with adventure and discovery, we'll retire to a charming restaurant nestled at the valley floor, where we'll commemorate our journey over a delightful dinner. Day 7 Ropojana valley (Montenegro) – Theth valley (Albania) The Ropojana Valley belongs at the top of the list of natural beauties in the region of Plav and Gusinje and is a pleasure we should indulge in. Besides, without a visit to Ropojana, our stay in this magical world on the northern side of Prokletije would not be complete. The Ropojana valley is a spectacularly beautiful place – jagged limestone peaks, rolling green pastures, high passes and beech forests - the perfect postcard picture. After breakfast, participants of the tour will pack only essential items in their backpacks, as the rest of the luggage will be transported and will be received at Podgorica Airport on the last day. This is due to the lack of a connecting automobile road between Ropojana and Theth Valley. A short transfer will then bring us to the village of Vusanje (alb. Vuthaj), where we start trekking up the Ropojana Valley, formed in the past by a 26 km long glacier. We will stop at a pupil-shaped karst spring Sava’s (Skakavica) Eye where an ice-cold river is born from melting snow high up in the mountains. The mountain-framed corridor takes us to pass a dry lake, shepherd huts, and an abandoned military post to the heart of the Albanian Alps. A weathered borderstone is the only reminder of the once tightly sealed borders of former Communist Albania. The trail is flanked by the spectacular Karanfili massif on the right and Maja Jezerces – the highest summit of the Dinaric Alps on the left. Walking forward we come to the foot of Mt. Arapi (2,217 m), a canine tooth- shaped peak which stands high above the Theth National Park forming the largest big wall in the Balkans. Arriving at Peja Pass (1,711 m), we stop for our picnic lunch with a fantastic view of the beautiful valley of Theth surrounded by an incredible panorama. Then we go down a steep well- trodden caravan path that leads by the small café where we take a rest, and by a short minivan transfer to a guesthouse in the centre of the lively village of Theth. During farewell dinner, we celebrate the eventful trek with our new friends, over recalling the past days of travel and celebrating the memorable journey through the Montenegrin mountains and Albanian Alps. Difficulty Level:
Moderate to Difficult (D4) Accommodation: Gueshouse in Theth (Albania) Meals Included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch Day 8 Departure After breakfast, we'll arrange a transfer to Podgorica Airport (TGD) (90 km, approximately 2.5-hour drive). Depending on your flight schedule, we might have some time to explore the charming town of Shkodra (Albania) en route. Upon arriving at Podgorica Airport (TGD), you'll be ready for your departure, marking the end of an unforgettable tour. Please note that the itinerary may change slightly based on the weather and the needs and desires of the group. Itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of the trip leader (guide).
