Itinerary:

OVERVIEW:  The weather is shaping up nicely for this Wednesday with expected midday temps in the low 80s and hardly any chance of rain.  Lullwater Park is a favorite destination of urban hikers, joggers and dog walkers—a "crown jewel" of Emory University's extended campus in NE Atlanta.  The 185-acre forested nature preserve boasts an extensive trail system that takes visitors along the banks of South Fork Peachtree Creek with its old mill ruins & waterfalls, over the creek via a $175,000 210-foot-long suspension footbridge, past the Emory president's "Lullwater Estate" mansion, and around beautiful Candler Lake.  The scenic creekside trails connect conveniently to the more recently developed "Hahn Woods" nature preserve at the western end of Emory's parklands.

WHEN & WHERE?
We’ll gather at 12:00 Noon in the Hahn Woods free parking lot at 866 Houston Mill Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30329—see detailed Directions below.

PICNIC & HIKE PLAN:  After introducing one another and signing our AOC waiver forms, we’ll head down (at about 12:15) to a scenic spot by the creek near our vehicles to enjoy our picnic lunches and drinks. After lunch we'll swing briefly by the cars again, then take a moderate hiking pace, with occasional pauses and photo-ops at scenic spots along the way—about 3 miles total.  Well-behaved dogs are welcome provided they're leashed and under their owners' control.  We expect to be back at our vehicles by about 2:30 PM.

“RAIN OR SHINE EVENT”:  We plan to go ahead with the event unless something highly unexpected occurs, in which case I would email everyone and post “cancelled” for the event on the AOC website.  As always, it's not a bad idea to stash some lightweight emergency rain gear in your pack in case of a shower.

Required Items to Bring:

• Wear comfortable well-broken-in Athletic Shoes or Hiking Boots with a coarse tread and Lightweight Clothing Layers appropriate for the weather, including emergency Rain Gear if showers are forecast -- e.g., a compact umbrella stashed in your pack.

• Bring a Picnic Lunch (e.g., sandwich, fresh fruit, salad, etc.) packed in a lightweight DayPack or Fanny Pack.  It is our custom to share various items that we have more than enough of.
SUGGESTION:  If you plan to drive from work, consider packing your picnic lunch and beverages in a small iced-down Cooler to leave in your car while you're at work, and transfer it to your pack when we meet for the hike.

Hydrate in advance and carry in your pack a filled Water Bottle or two (or other favorite soft beverages)—or if you have one, your filled "Camelbak" or other hydration system.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

• Consider bringing a pair of Trekking Poles if you have a pair and like to use them.  A simple Hiking Stick is an excellent alternative.

• Consider bringing your Camera—also perhaps lightweight Binoculars if you have a pair, for birding, etc.
