Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
If you are looking for a wilderness adventure in Idaho, the Sawtooth Wilderness Area is a perfect destination. This vast area of rugged mountains, alpine lakes, and forests offers endless opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and photography. You can explore over 350 miles of trails, ranging from easy to challenging, and enjoy the stunning views of the jagged peaks that give the area its name. The Sawtooth Wilderness Area is also home to diverse flora and fauna, including wolves, elk, moose, black bears, and eagles. Whether you want to relax by a serene lake or climb a challenging summit, the Sawtooth Wilderness Area will reward you with an unforgettable experience. The Hikes Sunday: Trail Creek Lakes (10.6 miles/2800 feet) - A gentle-ish beginning to our week of adventure. Reaching a max elevation of 7983 feet, this hike is a perfect chance to acclimate to our environment and enjoy the beautiful views and wildlife of the area. We will even have a glimpse of Observation Peak, our destination for Monday.
Monday: Observation Peak (16.2 miles/2740 feet) - We saw it yesterday... Let's hike it today. We will start from the other side of the park and make our way up to the top for some outstanding views! With a max elevation of 9138, we are making our way higher everyday.
Tuesday: Alice Toxaway Loop(18.7 miles/3150 feet) - This hike is often considered the best hike in the Sawtooths. Featuring both Alice Lake and the Alice-Toxaway Divide, we will find out why Alice doesn't live here anymore. We go a little higher today as we reach 9463 feet as our max elevation.
Wednesday: A well deserved easy day. Today will be a day for an easy hike and a little sight seeing as we rest our legs for the rest of our adventure. For those seeking more adventure, river rafting on the Salmon river is available.
Thursday: Sawtooth Lake and Alpine Peak (12.8miles/3421 feet) - One of the premier hikes in the Sawtooths, Sawtooth lake is a great destination by itself, but then we add a little scrambling to reach Alpine Peak for outstanding views and you have a true adventure. We will reach a peak altitude of 9855 feet on our trek.
Friday: Fourth of July Lake and Patterson Peak (7.8 miles/2300 feet) For most, a hike to Fourth of July Lake makes for a great hike, not us! The highlight of this trek will be the scramble up Patterson Peak. Another day of beautiful views... I can get used to this! Now that we are fully acclimated, the climb to 10,873 feet will feel like home.
This is an aggressive hiking schedule, I have a list of shorter trails we can use if heavy legs or bad weather get in our way. I also have a list of more difficult hikes, I am looking at you Thompson Peak, if the group feels so inclined. High Altitude Hiking Maybe you are lucky and hiking at altitude doesn't bother you. I am not. If altitude bothers you or you are concerned it might, a quick visit to the MD before the trip to get some prescription meds should take care of you. Either way, the hikes have been arranged so that we gain our altitude slowly. 70% of people will have minor symptoms of altitude sickness at above 10k feet. Training Preparation is the key to a trip like this. I will be scheduling weekly D5 training hikes leading up to our trip. Each individual is responsible to show up ready to hike, don't let yourself be the one holding up the group. I am normally a fast hiker, but when surronded by mountain peaks, I slow down. And if I don't, you can remind me to and I will. Promise. Lodging Stanley, Idaho is a great small town and will serve as our headquarters for this adventure. Stanley has plenty to choose from for dining, but is a little light in the grocery store department... more on that below. Accomodations are hard to come by in Stanley, but by booking (very) early we scored a nice place. If a rustic cabin in the mountains is your jam, Beckwith's Lodge beckons you! Plenty of space and a bed for every person. A great space to relax and rewind. The house is large enough to easily accommodate all 8 hikers, and is reasonably priced! I will be making room assignments based on club status, time of sign up, volunteer activities and gender mix. Sorry you must choose a gender before room assignments can be made.
Transportation Each hiker is responsible for air travel to Boise Airport by 2 o'clock on Saturday. Airfare to Boise is very reasonable, currently there are flights for about $400. Two SUVs will be included to support our adventures and will whisk you away from the airport to our luxury accommodations. Car rental and gas are included expenses. It is a longish drive to Stanley (3 hours), if you cannot make the 2pm deadline, you will need to rent a car or take a really long uber. Food Food is not included in the price. There is a small store in Stanley for picking up some supplies, but will not be sufficient for buying a weeks worth of food. We will stop at a TBD store on our way. It may require us to go to Ketchum, ID. Please buy enough breakfast and lunch supplies to last the week and assume we will be eating out for dinner every night. Who should sign up I am looking for fellow adventure seekers that are STRONG, independent hikers with low-drama personalities. If you need someone to carry your bag or get you out of bed, this may not be the best event for you. A total of 8 people will be allowed on the trip. All AOC members are welcome to sign up, I will be selecting the group based on the following criteria:
At signup time you will initially be placed on the waiting list. The group will be selected based on the above criteria and you will be added to the active roster and be given a link with which to pay. Once the attendee roster is published, we will give a time frame for attendees to pay. If you don't have D5 experience (email me if your experience is outside of the club), you will remain on the waitlist.
Failure to pay within the given timeframe will result in your removal from the active roster. You can help: This is group living and the whole group will need to help out to ensure the best outcome. You will be given several choices on how you can help including: be a driver, pick restaurants, backup navigation, king of the kitchen (and many more)... more on this as the time gets closer...

Notes: | |||||||
You may ask, "Why are we signing up and paying so early?". That is a good question, accomodations fill up quickly, I was able to grab this premier location by signing up and paying in April. Once all participants have paid, I will get reimbursed for the accomodations. You may also ask, "What happens if I cannot make the trip?". Another good question, assuming there is a wait list (there will be) and you drop before August 1, 2025, you will be reimbursed all but $35 when your replacement pays. Important information for paid events in which payment is managed through the AOC: - Payment must be received by the payment due date and prior to participation in the event. - Some paid events require a minimum number of registered participants. If that number is not met, the event will be canceled and refunds will be issued to those who have already paid. - Third-party vendors often require damage deposits. Each registrant agrees to be liable for and required to reimburse the Atlanta Outdoor Club for any withheld deposits due to the actions of or damages caused by that registrant. - No partial payments. All registrants must pay the posted Member Cost regardless of any agreement you may have with any party involved in the event. - Read the event description carefully for additional information, and contact the trip leader(s) with any questions. * We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
