Itinerary:

The Jones Bridge unit of the Chattahooche National Recreation Area is a great park with a lot of variety. We get the river views, hike up some small hills, through some nice open fields and beside a lake. We may even see a few deer or heron if we are lucky....numerous squirrels are guaranteed.

I usually do this as a D2, but making it a D3 this time, mainly because of the summer heat. Even though there is not much elevation change...about 550 feet over the entire 5 1/2 miles, those small hills take more out of you when it is hot and humid. We will moving at a decent clip on the flat areas though, which is about 90% of the hike.

You can bring your dog(s) along but they must be well behaved and must remain on a leash in accordance with park rules.

There is a $3 parking fee if you don't have an annual pass. Also note that there are two entrances to the park...one is usually gated but other one farther north off Barnwell is is open and where we are meeting...see more detailed directions belwo.

From GA 400, take exit 7a, and head East 4.1 miles through the intersection of Holcomb Bridge and Nesbitt Ferry Road to the junction of Barnwell Road. Turn left on Barnwell Rd, and travel approx 2 miles to Jones Bridge Branch which will be on the right. Turn in and go a little over 1/2 mile to large parking lot at end of road.
