Itinerary:

Join us for a hike in DeKalb County’s wonderful Mason Mill-Lullwater-Hahn Park complex, with an Ira Melton Park rock-hopping excursion thrown in as well.

Meet at the playground-rest room parking area of Mason Mill Park.  Please arrive early for introductions as we will leave at 10am sharp.  Parking is free and bathrooms are here.

As Mason Mill's website (see link below) says:

Mason Mill Park contains a 120-acre forest with a network of some of the nicest hiking and biking trails in the county. The South Peachtree Creek Trail is a multi-use boardwalk and paved route that connects Mason Mill Park, Medlock Park, the Leafmore neighborhood, and Emory University. A network of soft surface trails also provides miles of hiking opportunities within Mason Mill, Ira B. Melton, and Medlock Parks. The forest is also the location of the old Decatur Waterworks, which is on the National Historic Registry.

We begin down the Woodland Cove trail, going under the tracks and passing through the water works to the creek, then crossing it on boulders and into Ira Melton park.  Taking the short loop there we will hop back across the creek and head into Lullwater Park by crossing beneath Clairmont Road, pass the waterfall and proceed down the left side of South Peachtree Creek to Hahn Park at Houston Mill Road, do the short loop there and return the same way to the falls.

Then we circle Candler Lake and return to the parking spot via a trail that goes beside the boardwalk/paved walkway.

Our pace will be about 2.5 mph.  Much of the hike is along the creeks and consequently relatively flat but there are some hills including two of a steady 100’ climb.

Be sure you can handle the boulder-hopping; hiking sticks might help you there.

Optional lunch afterward at a local brewpub.
