Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary. | |||||||
Itinerary: | |||||||
Come hike the iconic Maroon Bells considered the most majestic mountains (and most photographed) in all of Colorado. Touted as one of the "Best hikes ever" by Backpacker Magazine. The mountain wildflowers will still be in bloom. This is a challenging backpack of 29.5 miles, 9000' elevation gain over 4 days and passes at about 12,500'. (see link below). You must have multi-day backpacking experience. While distance each day is relatively short, the ascending and descending each day is considerable and the trail is fairly rocky at times. The trail is full of incredible views and varied landscape. While the trip is marked Exploratory, both trip leaders have considerable mountain backpacking experience. Maroon Bells has been on both Tim's and Lindsey's bucket list for quite awhile. It's exceptionally difficult to get permits and campsites as so many want to go and they keep the numbers low to enjoy an uncrowded experience. This trip is a minimum group size of 4 and maximum of 8. All who sign up will be first placed on waitlist until trip leader approval based on capability and compatability. If approved, Trip Leader will move you over. (See anticipated costs for shuttle, hotel, camping under costs include.) There is a $25.00 fee to AOC for all extended travel events. Sun. July 13: Fly into Denver CO. We will get a rental van (or two cars) and drive to near Vail and stay at a Comfort Inn Mon. July 14: Enjoy Aspen, acclimate at 8000'. Nominal fee for public shower in Aspen. Store non-backpack lugguge in Aspen. Eat in Aspen and get a few eatables for camping at Difficult Campground near Aspen. Tues. July 15: Take taxi to 4 Pass Loop trailhead early; Hike 6.5 miles; camp about a mile from West Maroon Pass. D6 hike Wed. July 16: Hike over West Maroon Pass and Frigid Air Pass about 7 miles; camp in Favert Basin. D6 hike Thurs.: July 17: Hike 6 miles over Trail Rider Pass; camp near Geneva Lake. D6 hike Fri: July 18: Hike over Buckskin Pass and out 10 miles. D7 hike. Take taxi into Aspen, pick up car rental drive to Comfort Inn near Vail Sat. July 19: Drive back to Denver and fly home.
