Itinerary:

Join me on this tough hike along the curiosly named Chunky Gal Trail. This trail is known for its steep climbs and rugged terrain.  It's a solid D6 hike with extended and challenging climbs totaling about 18 miles and about 4500 ft elevation gain.

We'll start where the trail crosses hwy-64 and head up Boteler Peak for an awesome view of Chatuge Lake and the Hiawasee and Hayesville area. Then it's  back down to the cars and across the road for the climb up to the intersecion with the AT.  Expect some steep sections and blowdown along the way. There's an optional detour down the AT to the site of a plane crash near Whiteoak Stamp and Muskrat Creek Shelter.

Stories about the origin of the "Chunky Gal" name vary. One legend tells of a young Cherokee woman who left her family to be with a man from another tribe.  Another suggests it's derived from a native American game called "Chunque".

This is a tough D6 hike of 18 miles and 4500 ft.  The average pace should be 2.7-2.8 mph.  Be sure you're comfortable with hikes lasting up to 7 hours including faster pace sections of 3.0+ mph. Recent D6 experience is needed to join the fun. Expect an email from the trip leader to assess your compatibility if you don't have any D6 hikes in your AOC profile over the past few months.
