Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Devil's Fork State Park in the northwest corner of South Carolina is an outdoors person's paradise! It rests on the shores of Lake Joccassee a pristine mountain lake without development. There will be kayaking on the lake, hiking to remote waterfalls, enjoying quaint mountain towns like Cashiers and hanging out in fully furnished cabins at the park. We will enjoy one of a kind restaurants as well as cooking and grilling at the two cabin that have been reserved for 3 nights. 

Three Bedroom Cabin/Villa: Two 3-bedroom/2-bath villas accommodate up to six people, and includes a queen bed in two of the bedrooms and two single beds in the third bedroom.

Trip Leaders reserve the right to change itinerary based on weather, trail conditions, etc. 

This trip is a minimum group size of 4 and maximum of 8. All who sign up will be first placed on waitlist until trip leader approval based on capability and compatability. Also, ability to cook and/or grill along with gender to satisfy room pairing will be considered. If approved, Trip Leader will move you over. (See anticipated costs for cabin under Costs) There is a $25.00 fee to AOC for all extended travel events. This is rated a D4 hike for accumulated hiking of 3 days in a row and more challenging terrain in some cases. 

  • Monday, April 28: We will depart from Indian Trail Park and Ride at 9:00 a.m.; Final destinantion Devil's Fork State Park (2.5 hours from Atlanta) to check into one of our two cabins at 4pm; We will stop on the way in Wahalla, SC for a great lunch at Stumphaus Taproom.; Then travel to hike to Lower White Water Falls - 4 miles round trip (see link directly below); then on to Devil's Fork State Park. The 4 to 5 people in the first cabin will create a great dinner for the whole group! D3 hike

  • Tuesday, April 29: We will drive fairly close by to Cane Creek Falls, Issaqueena Falls and the amazing series of 4 large falls at Brasstown Falls all in the morning. We will have a picknick lunch back at the park and for those who wish can go kayaking on the lake with kayaks for rent. The folks staying in the second cabin will prepare dinner for the whole group. D3 hike

  • Wednesday, April 30: We will travel not far into N.C. to see Upper Whitewater Falls, the highest falls east of the Mississippi at 411 ft...that's right higher than Niagra Falls. We will then hike on a single 4 mile out and back hike to see Rainbow Falls, Turtleback Falls and Drift Falls. We will head into Cashier and maybe Highlands to visit these quant mountain towns for a great lunch.  D3 hike

  • Thursday, May 1: Check out of cabins by 10 am; for those who wish eat at Cornucopia (great outdoor but covered eating venue near cashiers) for lunch. It will be open by then. Head back to Atlanta.

Required Items to Bring:

Good hiking shoes, hiking poles, water, clothes for 4 days

Each cabin will coordinate food for the 4 days as well as the shared meal. More on this latter.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $140.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:
Important information for paid events in which payment is managed through the AOC:

     - Payment must be received by the payment due date and prior to participation in the event.

     - Some paid events require a minimum number of registered participants. If that number is not met, the event will be canceled and refunds will be issued to those who have already paid.

     - Third-party vendors often require damage deposits. Each registrant agrees to be liable for and required to reimburse the Atlanta Outdoor Club for any withheld deposits due to the actions of or damages caused by that registrant.

     - No partial payments. All registrants must pay the posted Member Cost regardless of any agreement you may have with any party involved in the event.

     - Read the event description carefully for additional information, and contact the trip leader(s) with any questions.

Cost Includes:

Anticipated cost per person: Does not include meals or travel costs.

Shared cabin (3 nights for own bed): Approx. $250 per person, depending on number of participants.

Final costs for shared travel and meals will be divided by participants at end of trip. 

Upfront shared costs for cabin of $250 per person must be paid by March 15. No refund will be provided unless a suitable substitute participant replaces you.

The payment of $25 only covers AOC Service Fee and is non-refundable. All costs (transportation, lodging, meals & drinks, and etc.) are paid by members on their own and/or as indicated above.
