Itinerary:
Moderate

From Standing Indian we will go up 2 miles on Long Branch trail, until we reach the Appalachian trail. We will then walk 2.8 miles south on the AT until we reach Big Spring shelter, where we will spend the night. The next day we will continue another 0.6 miles south on the AT to the summit of Albert mountain (elev. 5,250 feet). Summit has a fire tower and a magnificent view. After reaching the summit we will retrace our steps and go north approximately 0.3 miles and then walk about 1 mile on a connecting trail, until we reach Bearpen Trail, which descends 2.5 miles to USFS 67, 3.2 miles from Standing Indian.

NOTE: This is a nice hike for a beginning backpacker. I have a spare backpack sleeping bag and stove that I can lend. When you register for this event please send me email so I can add you to my mailing list.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Don’t for get to bring sleeping bag, mattress, cooking utensils, food for dinner on Saturday night and breakfast and lunch on Sunday (lunch should be cold), stove, at least one quart of water, and warm clothing. A tent will not be necessary since we will sleep in a shelter. I will bring filtration equipment to treat water.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:North Carolina 1:00 pm. at the Long Branch trail head near the Standing Indian campground (we will stop in Franklin for lunch at about 11:45). From the Park and Ride go north on I 85, and take the I 985 exit. I 985 becomes GA 365/US 23, which then merges with US 441. Proceed on US 441 until Franklin, NC (the driving distance from downtown Atlanta is 130 miles). Turn left (West) onto US 64 and proceed 10 miles until S.R. 1448 (Old US 64), which is on Wallace Gap, at the bottom of a steep grade. Turn left onto Old US 64 and follow the signs to the campground. The trail head is on paved USFS 67, about 1.5 miles South of Wallace Gap.
