Itinerary:

IN A NUTSHELL:  Each year the Atlanta Outdoor Club gladly “gives back” to the outdoors by participating in a wide variety of important environmental projects.  Over the years we’re proud to have volunteered thousands of “member-hours” in support of a multitude of worthy causes.  “National Trails Day,” the first Saturday in June of each year, is an especially appropriate time for this and our Club urges each member to observe this day by volunteering.
The lovely riverside units of our local Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) are among our favorite places for hiking and paddling events.  This year for Nat’l Trails Day (this Sat June 2) we’ve arranged for AOC members to give back by helping the CRNRA improve and spruce up the beautiful “Powers Island Unit” of the CRNRA.  This unit’s convenient parking lot is directly across the river from the larger and better known “Cochran Shoals” hiking/jogging lot and like Cochran Shoals is just upstream of the I-285 bridge over the river. (See detailed directions below.)  After the volunteer work, our AOCers are welcome to stay awhile with our AOC "subgroup" to explore more of the lovely trails there.

MORE DETAILS:  Our friends in the “Outreach” staff of our local REI stores are officially overseeing this event on behalf of the CRNRA, and I’ve registered our AOC “volunteer subgroup” of 12 with them.  REI has also recruited several dozen other volunteers from the public at large to pitch in at Powers Island along with us.  Those of us who arrive on time will likely receive a wicking REI Volunteer T-shirt as well as an REI coupon. A small lunch will be provided after the project.
Volunteers should bring work gloves and wear long pants as well as closed toed shoes. Any participant with bee sting allergies should bring their Epi-Pen.  Also bring water in a reusable water bottle or Camelbak and perhaps a light snack to sustain you prior to our lunch.

OTHER TRAILS DAY VOLUNTEER VENUES STILL AVAILABLE!    Note that AOC event leader Patrick Barry has also posted several other worthy Nat’l Trails Day projects that are still available for those of you who don’t mind driving a few miles from Atlanta.  Here’s Patrick's link: http://www.atlantaoutdoorclub.com/events/details.asp?eventid=5225

Required Items to Bring:

SEE ABOVE DISCUSSION under "MORE DETAILS." The REI organizers will likely have some work gloves available if you don't bring your own.  In past projects such as these, a few pair of long-handled and short-handled hedge clippers have come in handy, so if you own clippers, consider bringing a pair or two.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

MEET at 8:00 AM in the CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER NRA “POWERS ISLAND - INTERSTATE NORTH PKWY” PARKING LOT.
It's in northwest metro Atlanta, adjoining the access road just NE of the I-285 bridge over the river. This lot is directly across the river from the main Cochran Shoals parking area that is so popular among joggers & dog walkers.  Following are directions from I-285 on Atlanta’s north side:

IF DRIVING EASTWARD ON I-285 FROM THE I-75 INTERCHANGE in NW ATLANTA:

1. Get off I-285 at Exit #22, “Northside Drive, New Northside Drive, Powers Ferry Road.”

2. Continue straight ahead for about 0.2 mile to the light at New Northside Drive.

3. Turn Left onto New Northside Drive and go about 0.5 mile to the second traffic light (crossing the I-285 bridge).

4. Continue straight ahead another 0.7 mile on Interstate North Parkway.

5. Turn Right into the CRNRA parking lot just BEFORE you cross the river. A small street sign here reads "1650 Riveredge Parkway," but Caution! – that address works incorrectly with Google Maps, GPS, etc!  It's best to input as your destination the following Lat/Lon Coordinates of the Powers Island parking lot entrance on Interstate North Parkway: 33.902871,-84.441208

IF DRIVING WESTWARD ON I-285 FROM  SANDY SPRINGS, SPAGHETTI JCN, etc:

1. Get off I-285 at Exit #22 “New Northside Drive/ Powers Ferry Rd.”

2. Turn Right onto New Northside Drive and go about 0.2 mile to the next light.

3. Now continue straight ahead FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS # 4 and #5 above to the parking lot.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
