Itinerary: | |||||||
This is one of my favorite areas in Georgia. It's lush, green, has clear mountain streams, beauty, but ruggedness and remoteness. The hike will have a total distance of about 8.5 miles, and 2,000 feet of ascent, but will be broken up with a nice long breaks for lunch, swimming, and enjoying the beauty. We will begin by hiking approximately 3 miles to Overflow Creek Falls. Next we will attempt to take a shorter trail (which I'm not sure of the condition) towards Three Forks. If it turns out that trail doesn't exist, or can't be found... no need to fret, we will take the slightly longer 'normal' trail there. Three Forks is so named because it's the confluence of 3 creeks - Overflow Creek, Big Creek, and Holcomb Creek - to form the West Fork of the Chattooga. It's an awsome spot and we will spend about an hour and a half here having lunch, swimming, exploring, and enjoying the area. Once we leave Three Forks we will start the hike back towards the cars. However, we will make a stop at another nice waterfall with a swimming hole which we will take a long break at to enjoy its beauty before completing the final part of the hike to the cars. We will plan to stop in Clayton for dinner afterwards. If you don't wish to stop, you don't have to but ensure that you only ride with others that are not stopping, or else plan to drive yourself to the event.
Note: I'm posting a Tallulah Gorge State Park, gorge floor hike and swim at Bridal Veil Falls the following day (Labor Day). I plan to camp in between this event and that one, so if anyone is interested in both events you can join me for camping.

Carpool Cost: | Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $85.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
