Many folks have requested D2 hikes - - but most Chatahooche Recreation Area hikes are restricted to D3 difficulty and above. It's a shame, because most of the CNRA units are so beautiful; they should be shared by everyone - - not just the fit/fast hikers. So this hike is for those of you who want to see this beautiful area at a reasonable pace - - but still get a little exercise and enjoy the company of others. For this hike, we'll park at the VISITOR'S CENTER, which is about 1/2 mile down the road after you pass the entrance sign. It's a surprisingly long drive. We'll walk by the river for about 45 minutes, then turn around and retrace our steps. There are beautiful rock formations to see, and the river is always full of geese and ducks. There's beauty on both sides of the trail, so the back-and-forth route won't be boring. Feel free to bring your dog on this event, but please abide by the park regulations that require that owners keep their dogs on a leash and clean up after their pets on the trails. (Dogs off leash have been known to stir up yellow jackets, resulting in painful stings to both nearby hikers and the dogs themselves.) This park requires a $3 parking fee. If you don't have an annual pass, be sure to bring $3 cash. (No change is available!) The Visitor's Center has bathrooms, but please plan to leave early enough to use the facilities before the hike starts. Also, Island Ford is the main CNRA unit, so you can buy your annual CNRA pass here ($25) and avoid that pesky $3 charge every time you park at one of the units.
