This is a 10 mile hike that starts at the highest point in Georgia - Brasstown Bald. We'll descend to the Appalachian trail where we'll follow the AT out to Unicoi Gap. This trip requires a car shuttle so everyone needs to meet at the carpool location. We'll drop some of our cars off at Unicoi Gap and everyone will pile into the remaining cars and travel up to the Brasstown Bald parking lot at 4,360 feet. From there, we'll hike the 1/2 mile trail to the summit of Brasstown Bald at 4,784 feet and enjoy the view. We'll retrace our footsteps to the parking lot and ultimately descend the Jacks Knob Trail along Wolfpen Ridge for an additional 2.3 miles until we intersect GA 180 at Jack's Gap. The trail then has two significantly steep climbs as it undulates up and down for the next 1.9 miles until it meets the AT at 4.5 miles. We will then follow the AT for the next 4.4 miles until we reach Unicoi Gap at 2,949 feet. Beware! This latter section has a couple of steep climbs of more than a mile that gain 500 feet or more in elevation.

Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $72.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

There is a $3.00 parking fee at Brasstown Bald. You need to be in pretty good shape to complete this hike. If you are unsure of your ability, try a shorter and easier hike before attempting this one. If the temperatures continue to hover in the high 90's, plan on bringing more liquids, including a sport drink (e.g., Gatorade) to replace the electrolytes you're losing.
