Itinerary: | |||||||
The promo collage is the views of various mountains in the region (taken from Springer Mountain, Tray Mountain, Big Frog Mountain, Kelly Knob, Blood Mountain, and Mount LeConte) but does include the remembrance flag field from KM just so you know :-) Do this event every week and you'll have no problems climbing up to Albert Mountain on the weekends, plus your legs won't be sore the next day! We all know why 9/11 gets special mention (if you don't, ask your Trip Leaders and we'll "learn you right proper!"), so we're encouraging you to show up in your red, white, and/or blues. There might even be some popsicles awaiting you at the finish line (unless you beat Trena back there). This powerhike is for those that already "own" Kennesaw "Mountain", know the trails (ideally, but not required), and consider it a rather easy climb. Realize that we get very spread out. Please look over the directions below to (potentially) save yourself some time getting there. If everyone is there early, we will move on out. Note that this is a go at your own pace (although fast) hike. Some may run at times. After introductions (if you are new) and a quick briefing (e.g. Go to Burnt Hickory and back, perhaps) we will ascend the 1.2 miles to the 1808 foot top of Big Kennesaw Mountain which is a climb of 657 feet. From there we will drop down about 500 feet to the gap between Big Kennesaw and Little Kennesaw Mountain, up and over the hump in the middle which is about a 20 foot climb heading towards Little Kennesaw and about a 50 foot climb heading back, then down to the base of Little Kennesaw. From there it's about a 300 foot climb to the top of Little Kennesaw at 1601 feet. Then we'll head down the other side of Little Kennesaw to Burnt Hickory for a short break (5 seconds maybe). After that we'll head back the same way we came. Study the map, especially if you've never been there before. We'll be going from the Visitor Center to Burnt Hickory Road on what is called the West Trail (the mountains kind of run southwest to northeast. The West Trail (the one on the west) goes over the mountains. The East Trail (the one on the east) goes around the mountains). At every fork in the trail on the way over, choose right and you'll be alright. Does anyone read the event descriptions? Haha. Send the TLs an email saying "Ooh! Ooh! I did! I did!" if you did read this. Keep us on our toes.
