Itinerary:

Meet at the carpool location and drive to the trailhead. Then we'll proceed down the steps and along the Amicalola River on the pressure treated walkway. This area makes a nice photo opportunity, and at the end of the walkway are what is known as the "Edge of the World" rapids. These are serious rapids where the locals like to hang out. We will hike this loop trail in a counter clock-wise direction, take a short break by the rapids, then proceed with our second loop.

You can hear the river for a while and then once into the woods it becomes very quiet on this lightly traveled trail. You will see many interesting sites along the way including a tree that has an unbelievable number of woodpecker holes all over it. The trail is 2.9 miles and hilly. We will do the trail twice for 6 miles so this is not a beginner hike. I'd like to keep a moderate pace.

The parking lot is small so it's best if we carpool if possible. Also, a GORP pass is required to hike this area. We have a pass that will cover 8 people. Persons 65 and older are exempt.

We plan to stop for lunch on the way back at Fajita Grill in Dawsonville.

How to Get There:

Event Directions:

From Atlanta, take GA 400 North to just past the North Georgia Premium Outlets. Turn left at the strip mall onto Route 53 West. Go 6.3 miles to the three way stop sign. Veer left and stay on Route 53 towards Tate. Go 6.1 miles to the gravel parking lot just before you cross the bridge over the river.

Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $32.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

Please arrive a few minutes early. We plan to leave the carpool promptly at 9:30 am. If you are meeting at the event, we should be there by 10:00 am.

No restrooms at the trailhead but plenty of woods.
