Itinerary:

IN A NUTSHELL:  The weather is expected to be beautiful this Friday morning, so please join us for this fascinating "Learn-your-Native-Plants" hike and optional "Colors-of-Fall" lecture that are unaffected by the Federal government "shutdown" and available at no charge to all who have an interest in nature and gardening.  On Fridays each fall Georgia Perimeter College offers such an "Open House" guided walk plus lecture in their amazing botanical garden at their "Decatur Campus" on Atlanta's east side.
The GPC Native Plant Botanical Garden displays beautiful trees, shrubs, vines, ferns and bog plants in two main garden areas. The Native Plant Garden boasts over 4000 different native, rare, and endangered perennials, flowering plants and shrubs indigenous to the Southeast and other parts of the U.S.  Also featured now is their newer Ferns of the World exhibit which is said to have more different species of ferns than any other garden in the United States!

EVENT DETAILS:  Our Atlanta Outdoor Club "subgroup" will gather at 10:00 AM at the garden entrance - see detailed directions & GPS info below.  After introducing one another we'll walk in together and first explore the greenhouse area.  A variety of potted native plants are offered for sale to garden guests at very reasonable prices.  At 10:30 AM we'll join plant identification expert David O. Funderburk for a leisurely guided hike through the garden entitled "Plant ID - the Basics."  Now retired, Mr. Funderburk has had a distinguished career as a nature educator, author and member of the professional staff of Fernbank Science Center.
Stick around with us if you like at 12:00 Noon for a fascinating talk entitled "The Color of Fall," also presented by Mr. Funderburk.  Bring a picnic lunch if you like, and we can enjoy our lunches and share extra items both before and during the talk.

FOR MORE ABOUT THE GARDEN:  Click on the following handy link for a schedule of all of GPC's nice "Friday Open House" walks & talks in the botanical garden this fall.  You can also click "Home" (at the base of that page) to access their other beautiful garden webpages and photos.
