Itinerary:

EVENT PLAN:  The evening weather this Sunday of Labor Day weekend is expected to be nice:  Partly cloudy in the 80s with less than a 30% chance of any isolated showers.  Please join us for this easy 3-mile hike in NE Atlanta on the lovely trails at the new "Frazier-Rowe Park" and along shady sidewalks, etc. in its quiet adjoining residential neighborhood.  After the hike and brief skygazing session (see more below) some of us might enjoy having dinner at the popular "Oak Grove Market" also on LaVista just west of our trailhead.

WHERE & WHEN? We'll meet at 7:00 PM at the Frazier-Rowe Park bulletin board and trailhead by the free Vista Grove shopping center parking lot on LaVista Rd. (See easy detailed directions below and for a zoomable map or satellite view click above on the square blue & green "Event Location" icon.

CELESTIAL BONUS! Toward the end of our hike just after sunset we can likely witness a rare celestial treat!  The crescent Moon, Saturn and Mars will be in a tight cluster ("in conjunction" with one another) in the western sky.  Weather permitting, we should be able to enjoy it with our naked eyes and with binoculars - which I'll bring to share.  BTW, I easily spotted the spectacular triple on Friday night, but the crescent moon was smaller and a bit farther from the 2 adjoining planets than it will be Sunday night.

CANINE COMPANIONS OK!  Bring your well-behaved dog if you like, but please make sure that he or she is leashed and under your control at all times.

ABOUT the PARK:  Frazier-Rowe Park and its trail system, bridges/structures and botanical displays were designed and built since early 2013 by hard-working "friends of the Park" and Boy Scout volunteers on about 10 acres of forested property in DeKalb County just northeast of the LaVista/ Oak Grove Road intersection.  For more information and photos click this link: http://frazier-rowepark.weebly.com/about.html


Required Items to Bring:


• Wear comfortable well-broken-in Athletic Shoes or Hiking Boots and Lightweight Clothing appropriate for the weather.  If you have Trekking Poles, consider bringing them.  A simple shoulder-high Hiking Stick works about as well to improve stability and to let your upper body reduce the burden on your legs and knees.

• Hydrate in advance and carry in your Daypack or Fanny Pack a filled Water Bottle or your "Camelbak" or other hydration system.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

FROM I-85 CLAIRMONT RD EXIT (Exit #91) in NE Atlanta to our FRAZIER-ROWE PARK Meetup Spot:   (For a zoomable color MAP and satellite view of this spot and its vicinity click on the square blue & green "Event Location" icon near the top of this article.)

1. From I-85 Exit #91 (GA-23, "Clairmont Rd") take Clairmont Road toward Decatur (south & slightly east) about 1.6 miles to the traffic light at LaVista Road.
2. Turn Left onto LaVista and go eastward 0.9 mile (THROUGH the next the two adjoining traffic lights at Oak Grove Rd) to the small Vista Grove shopping center on your Left (at 2868 LaVista Rd).  Look for the green & white striped roofs and park near the Subway and "Sprig" restaurants on the end of the shopping center by the woods.

3. We'll gather between 6:45 and 7:00 at the "Frazier-Rowe Park" bulletin board and trailhead on the edge of the woods - just a few feet beyond the Sprig restaurant entrance.
