Itinerary:

#6 - Coosa Bald

At 4280' above sea level and with 960' of clean prominence, Coosa Bald is actually tied with #7 Double Spring Knob as far as elevation goes. But it has more prominence, so that's why it is higher on the list.

This is going to be one of the most challenging hike in the series...using one of the most strenuous trails in GA, the Duncan Ridge Trail.  This trail is basically a roller coaster...big climbs, big descents, and small gaps in between...one after the other after the other.  It will be a challenge, but hopefully well worth the effort.

We will begin at Wolfpen Gap and jump on the DRT, headed north.  We will actually summit Coosa Bald fairly quickly after a 950' climb....sadly not much of a view from up there.  The photo from above is frommany years ago before it became so overgrown.. So just remember that image and can picture it in your mind when at the summit.

From Coosa Bald, we will just continue on the DRT, headed northwest.  We will keep going until we reach Mulky Gap and then Akin Mtn, 7.5 mi from our starting point.  This is where we will turn around and head back....and this is where you will definitely earn the summit of Coosa Bald on the return trip. From there is is down into Wolfpen Gap to the cars and then home.

The total distance should be about 15 miles and total ascent about 5500' feet.

We will leave promptly at 7:30 AM.

Ralph and I have our GPS and tracking maps and feel comfortable doing this hike.
