Sat, Jul 13 2024 - KMNBP Trails Work Days - New Bridge on the 24 Gun Trail Near the Cannons (View Original Event Details)
|
We drove to the Gilbert Road Parking Lot and parked in the field across from the trailhead going to the 24 Gun Trail. We started work with 5 other volunteers and 9 crew leaders. After signing in we walked to where the material was staged about two thirds of a mile then started carrying material to the worksite. Unlike June, where the material was only a few feet from the work area. This time it was over 500’ We had to carry both the new material to the worksite and the old material from the worksite. The Crew Leaders had started at 8, we joined them after a safety brief about 8:30. At 12 some of us had to leave with the rest staying as long as they could. Those of us that stayed finished the bridge at 2:10. Six hours and ten minutes later with the old rotting 7’*16’ removed and the new heavy duty 8’*16’ was in place with guard rails.
This was the hardest and most technical monthly workday we have done. Between the heat, fortunately the was a lot of bottle water available, and the distance we had to carry pressure treated 6”*6”*16’, 4”*4”*8’, and 2”*4”*8’ boards we were hot and tired by the end.
I would like to thank Ross for joining us on his sixth event.
